Exhibition Outline
The subjects of netsuke include playful themes and wishes for good omens, which shows the tastes of the Edo people who chose auspicious items for their ornaments. “Iwami netsuke” are netsuke made by Iwao Shimizu (Tomiharu I) and his family based in Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, in the late Edo period. This exhibition will display items from the museum’s collection as well as the collection donated to Gotsu City Makoto Shichida(1929-2009), an Iwami netsuke collector from Gotsu City, and will focus on the meaning and expression of each Iwami netsuke subject. (38 works to be exhibited)
