This exhibition by the Yasugi, Shimane native and internationally active creator Izumi Kato (b. 1969) is notable as the artist’s largest solo show to be held in Japan. When Kato first became active as a painter in the late 1990s, he started producing human figures with simple faces and bodies. In the 2000s, he began making wooden sculptures, and today, Kato also creates works that employ a wide range of materials including stone, fabric, soft vinyl, and plastic models.
Assembling over 200 items, from never-before-shown oil paintings dating from Kato’s high-school days to his most recent works, this exhibition provides viewers with a look back at each stage of the artist’s career as well as his latest efforts. The show also introduces Kato’s wide range of activities from a variety of perspectives, including installations, with some new works among them, music projects, and products.
